Review

Rolling Stone (9/3/98, p.101) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...deftly captures the energy and exuberance of her concerts. Blige is a commanding, self-assured performer, and she plays her audience like a damn fiddle..."

Title Note

Personnel: Mary J. Blige (vocals); Luke Austin, Loren Dawson, Jeff Motley (keyboards); Lanar "Kern" Brantley (bass); Michael Clemons (drums); Chantell Jones, Dustin Adams, Joya Owens, Michelle Matlock, Paulette McWilliams, Cindy Mizelle, Audrey Wheeler, Angel Rogers, Sharon Bryant-Gallwey (background vocals).

Engineers include: Larry "Lar" Alexander.

Recorded at Sony Studios, New York, New York and live at The Universal Ampitheatre, Los Angeles, California.

With the excitement only a live performance can engender, Mary J. Blige plows through all of her hits on THE TOUR. The 23-track collection of material was recorded at various venues along the route of Mary's 1997-1998 "Share My World" tour. Sounding a bit different from her studio recordings, such show- stoppers as "Sweet Thing," "My Life" and "I Can Love You" glow with the energy and vibrant live textures that studio recordings sometimes lack.

Also included on the album are studio-recorded covers of Aretha Franklin's "Day Dreaming" and Dorothy Moore's "Misty Blue," both of which are personal favorites of Blige. With a smooth sound and overall polish, THE TOUR offers insight as to why the singer's popularity continues to grow with each release. Other tracks that capture Mary's impressive command of the stage are "You Remind Me," "I'm Going Down" and "Missing You."
