The avant-garde composer Phill Niblock edits together recordings of acoustic instruments to produce continuous tones that are gradually altered by both naturally occurring and digitally produced microtones. The effect, when played at the high volume the composer recommends, can be monolithic, comforting, and awe-inspiring, sometimes simultaneously. TOUCH THREE contains nine works, from "Sethwork," performed on an acoustic guitar, to "Parker's Altered Mood," played on alto saxophone, which superimposes six decontextualized recordings of the classic Charlie Parker bebop jazz track "Parker's Mood" to create a unique, otherworldly collection of sounds.
