Entertainment Weekly (6/7/02, p.76) - "...Documents the return of the guitar and the ongoing decline of the sensitive white chick..." - Rating: B-

Title Note

TOTALLY HITS 2002's crop of pop hits runs the gamut from Fat Joe's East Coast gangsta rap "What's Luv" to Leann Rimes's odd disco-meets-country outing "Can't Fight the Moonlight." It stops along the way to embrace potential one-hit-wonders such as Tweet, whose ode to pleasure "Oops (Oh My)" is probably the most R-rated entry here, and contemporary rockers like P.O.D., whose anthemic "Youth of the Nation" combines elements of rap and U2 in a kind of alternative State Of The Union polemic. Elsewhere, femme faithfuls such as Alanis Morissette and Jewel, whose "Standing Still" displays the artist's continuing ability to keep abreast of the times, make welcome re-appearances alongside relative newcomers like the spunky anti-Britney Pink, whose "Get the Party Started" was already one of the year's highlights.

Aussie Natalie Imbruglia's airy "Wrong Impression" was one of the few Britpop incursions into the charts in 2002. Another, Craig David's "7 Days," is so US-R&B influenced it's hard to remember he's in fact British. Boy bands are represented by O-Town's Latin-lite "We Fit Together," but perhaps the most memorable cut here is Outkast's glorious "The Whole World," which channels Bootsy, George Clinton, and Grandmaster Flash in one unforgettable package.
