Mesh Match For "Tossing Seeds" CD by Superchunk:

Superchunk Artist Snapshot:

Perhaps the quintessential US indie band of the 1990s, Superchunk picked up where '80s acts like Husker Du and the Replacements left off, at the intersection of pop and punk, adding a '90s twist and defining a new generation of alternative rock. Led by Mac McCaughan, the band released a string of albums whose punky power and melodic bent provide fodder for a subsequent generation of punk-pop and emo bands. On top of all that, the label Superchunk started, Merge, became one of the most important indie-rock sources of the era, hosting the Arcade Fire, Dinosaur Jr., Lambchop, the Magnetic Fields, and countless others.

Review

Spin (4/92, p.97) - Highly Recommended - "..Along with Pavement, it's the only new music worth listening to.."
Magnet (p.114) - "[A] snapshot from the dawn of an influential indie scene."
Option (July-Aug./1992, p.127) - "..holds up as a document of a band's incremental progession of seven-inches...this reminds me that it's not such a bad thing to be white and rocking honestly.."

Title Note

Superchunk: Mac McCaughan (vocals, guitar), Jim Wilbur, Jack (guitar), Laura Ballance (bass), Chuck (drums).

Recorded at Duck Kee Studios, Raleigh, North Carolina and Chicago Recording Company, Chicago, Illinois between 1989 and 1991. Includes liner notes by Mac McCaughan.

All songs written by Superchunk except "Train From Kansas City" (J. Barry/ E. Greenwich), "Night Creatures" (Freeman/O'Connor), and "It's So Hard To Fall In Love" and "Brand New Love" (Lou Barlow/Eric Gaffney).

TOSSING SEEDS is a compilation of Superchunk's singles on the Merge and Matador labels, the FREED SEED EP, and a track from the THREE'S COMPANY EP.

Although Superchunk would go on to make more sophisticated, nuanced recordings later in its career, the Chapel Hill, North Carolina, band's early singles--collected here on TOSSING SEEDS (SINGLES 89-91)--typify both the band's sound and its approach to making music. Even in its subtler moments, Superchunk has always been about the singular rush one gets from a purely great rock-&-roll song, and this collection of 13 tracks, originally released as six singles on the band's own Merge Records, offers more than its fair share of those moments. Songs like "My Noise," "Cast Iron," and the indie anthem "Slack Motherf***er" have become underground classics.

With a simple line-up of two guitars, bass, and drums, Superchunk made rambunctious, melodic rock music about being young, bored, and in love, songs made all the more affecting by singer/guitarist Mac McCaughan's desperate yelps and romantic howls. And while Superchunk's appreciation for the poppier side of '70s British punk isn't hard to spot, this is very much classic American indie-rock, a point made all the more apparent by the pair of Sebadoh covers ("It's So Hard to Fall in Love" and "Brand New Love") that close this exhilarating compilation.
