Review

"[A] damning paper trail that reveals, in uninflected bureaucratic prose, the roots that those terrible images [of Abu Ghraib] had in decisions made at the highest levels of the Bush administration....[T]he minutely detailed chronological narrative embodied in this volume...possesses an awful and powerful cumulative weight."

Publisher's note

The torture memos and reports which U.S. government officials wrote to prepare for and legitimize coercive interrogation, including techniques many would label as torture, are brought together in this collection of documents.

Annotation

This huge compendium of materials relating to the events at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and to the issue of detention, interrogation, and torture by the US military in time of war, includes official documents, reports by outside investigators, and the photographs that shocked the world when their existence was revealed in 2004. Some of the internal memos and legal briefs included go back to 2001, showing the discussions that took place and the positions taken by the military and by Bush administration officials on things such as the Geneva Convention, the war in Afghanistan, and the Guantanamo prison facility--and their contrasts with the findings of the investigative reports by the American Bar Association and other groups. Included also are specific descriptions of methods of interrogation, along with transcripts of interviews with interrogators and detainees. Together they form a casebook on the troubling events that came to pass at Abu Ghraib prison under the control of American forces.
