Tenor saxophonist Tommy McCook is a giant in Jamaican music. He was one of the frontmen of the legendary Skatalites before forming his own group for the Treasure Isle label. Throughout his career, he played on hundreds of ska, rock steady, and reggae hits, from early ska stompers to King Tubby's and Yabby You's more rootical mid-'70s productions. This outing from 1969 features a formation made up of many former Skatalites, including the rhythm section of Lloyd Knibbs and Lloyd Brevett, along with Lynn Taitt on guitar and Winston Wright on organ. Also joining McCook on some tracks are a very young Sly & Robbie, trumpeter Bobby Ellis, as well as regular Supersonics "Drumbago" Parks and pianist Gladstone Anderson. This joyous music shares more with jazz than with any other style of music and thus the presence of masterful musicians makes the results even more special. Later ska-jazz revivalists like Jazz Jamaica and the Stubborn All-Stars owe much to McCook's influence and listeners can hear why in punchy showstoppers like "Green Apple" and "Walk on This Side."
