An early-1960s period piece, this collection of songs and instrumentals in praise of the cutting edge of the U.S. auto industry was put together by Beach Boys associate Gary Usher, who used many of the same musicians employed on the Beach Boys' recordings, including the guitarist Glen Campbell and the drummer Hal Blaine. Not surprisingly, the sound is very similar to that of contemporary Beach Boys cuts like "Little Deuce Coupe" and "Surfin" U.S.A.," with some burning instrumentals featuring Dick Dale-like guitar and wailing saxophone. Whether you find the lyrics to tracks like "The Ballad of Bonneville" and "427 Super Stock" hilarious or rhapsodic will depend on your preference for big block, multiple carb muscle cars and the men who drive 'em.
