Dirty Linen (6-7/99, p.68) - "...deftly using the great sense of timing employed by the best storytellers. And that's what Olney really is - one of our best storytellers."

Singer-songwriter Olney has been known as an innovative country-folk troubadour since the '80s, but his journey toward the perfection that is THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY has been a long one. The very definition of a developing talent, Olney has charted an unswerving upward course over the years, each of his albums bettering its predecessors. Some know him through Emmylou Harris' versions of his "Jersualem Tomorrow" and "Deeper Well," but one listen to THROUGH A GLASS is enough to identify Olney as a powerful performer with an identity all his own.

Olney was friends with Townes Van Zandt for years, and the late, legendary troubadour's influence is strongly felt here. Olney covers Van Zandt's "Snowin' on Raton," and there's more than a little of Townes in the character who occupies "The Suicide Kid." It's mordant, minor-key country/blues tunes like "Little Bit of Poison" and "Ice Cold Water" that are the strongest nods to Van Zandt and among the most memorable songs here. Olney's far from derivative though, as his unique narrative command takes listeners into uncharted waters on the biblical first-person account of "Barabbas" and the WWI French prostitute's tale "1917."
