Review

JazzTimes (p.123) - "Now, poetically eloquent as ever, Simon shapes poignant tales of motherhood, hard-won self-awareness, the sweet satisfaction of deep, true later-in-life love, and even the hint of death on the horizon."

Title Note

Personnel: David Saw, Peter Calo (guitar); Aaron Heick (saxophone); Lincoln Goines (bass guitar); Robby Ameen (drums); Rick Marotta, Cyro Baptista (percussion); Teese Gohl, Elena Barere.

Arranger: Teese Gohl.

Carly Simon's debut on the Starbucks-affiliated Hear Music label is her strongest effort in some time. A collaboration with producer and arranger Jimmy Webb and producer Frank Fillippi, THIS KIND OF LOVE features Simon's earthy vocals and sensitive, personal songwriting in a variety of musical styles ranging from jazzy torch ballads and uptempo soul struts to the heartfelt piano ballads that first made her name. Highlights include the elegiac "Too Soon To Say Goodbye" (a farewell to political humorist Art Buchwald, an old family friend who passed away in 2007) and the wistful "Sangre Dolce." Neither an old school throwback nor a shameless attempt to appeal to modern musical trends, THIS KIND OF LOVE is a thoughtful and mature album with wide pop appeal.
