Tanya Donelly Artist Snapshot:

If Kristin Hersh was the mad brains of 1980s schizo-rockers Throwing Muses, Hersh's half-sister Tanya Donelly was its warm, beating heart. When Donelly left the band in the early '90s, she staked a melodic, accessible path that curved near but slightly away from mainstream pop. She served briefly in the first Breeders line-up, providing celestial counterpoint to Kim Deal's earthier influence, then formed the band Belly, whose first album, STAR, was an immediate hit, yielding two singles and two Grammy nominations. After one more album with Belly, Donelly went completely solo, and started a pattern of sporadic but critically acclaimed releases that showcase her girlish singing, heady lyrics, and breathtaking melodies.

Review

No Depression (p.88) - "The best original is 'Littlewing', a buoyant celebration of motherhood on which Donelly's joyfulness is infectious."

Title Note

Personnel: Tanya Donelly (vocals, guitar); Joan Wasser (vocals, violin); Bill Janovitz (vocals); Dean Fisher (guitar); Rich Gilbert (pedal steel guitar); Joe McMahon (upright bass); Arthur Johnson (drums).

Recording information: The Windham, Bellows Falls, VT.

THIS HUNGRY LIFE is the most mature and nakedly emotional release of Tanya Donnelly's career. The songs--almost all string-laden ballads recorded live (with only a few overdubs)--swoop and soar with stuntpilot melodies delivered in a throaty voice that has ripened beyond its former coyness. The lyrics--addressing the complexities of love and the despair of a war-torn world--are her least ambiguous to date. That George Harrison's lovely "Long Long Long" fits right in says much about the album's open-hearted folk-rock vibe.
