For an "alternative" act, Freakwater's sound was surprisingly straightforward and traditional for most of their career. That showed signs of changing, though, with 2005's THINKING OF YOU. Freakwater recruited members of the experimental post-rock outfit Califone to play on the album, and that band's unique instrumentation (clarinet and pump organ can be heard among the sounds here) gives THINKING OF YOU the feel of a rich, postmodern tapestry.

Yet the band still holds remarkably true to its roots. Old-timey atmospheres, acoustic textures, and the full, affecting harmonies of Janet Beveridge Bean and Catherine Ann Irwin keep the neo-traditionalist flag flying. Somewhere between the strength of the original material and the band's ability to balance art and folk, Freakwater have alighted on a stunning formula.
