Review

Dirty Linen (p.75) - "[A] first-rate sampler of West African music with old favorites like Baaba Maal and Toumani Diabate matched up with newcomers like Nora Kane and Etran Finatawa."

Title Note

There have been several acoustic world music collections before, of differing qualities. The rich musical cultures of West Africa should offer a field day for a compiler. There's a wealth of material, traditional and modern, to choose from. It's perhaps a little sad, then, that for the most part, Think Global: West Africa Unwired makes some very obvious choices. The music is still gorgeous, and there are well-known names like Baaba Maal to draw in the punters. But somehow it all feels very safe, as if there was a conscious decision not to take any chances with the disc. That said, it really is impossible to fault the lyrical koras of Toumani Diabat‚ and Ballak‚ Sissoko, or the aching songs of Boubacar Traor‚. The Baaba Maal track, from early in his career, is pleasant, but not his best acoustic work, and it's debatable whether Nuru Kane and Etran Finatawa are quite worthy of inclusion here. A track from a legend like Djelimady Tounkara, for instance, would have been appropriate, or the inclusion of more female talent. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with this compilation, and the cause (Oxfam) is an excellent one. But it could have been so much more than it is. ~ Chris Nickson
