By bill the movie man
After an absence from the video field lasting several months it is a pleasure to
see this GREAT movie back in circulation again. This new Criterion Collection
DVD has been prepared with suitable care, and is superior to its earlier MGM/UA
counterpart (now withdrawn). The colors are very sharp, rich, and well defined
from start to finish, sound is good, though this reviewer would have preferred
slightly more treble. But it must be noted that the London Films logo on this
new release is fully complete and splice free, as opposed to the earler release.
Also kudos to the sound engineers for having cleaned up much of the distortion
in the main title choral passages, which have plagued most earlier video
releases. In summary, a very nice THIEF OF BAGDAD indeed! Supplemental material
is a matter of interest, for film history buffs the semi-documentary THE LION
HAS WINGS will no doubt be a great find. Interview with composer Miklos Rosza is
fine quality and very interesting to hear. It must be pointed out that the
accompanying booklet has a lengthy essay on the background and making of THE
THIEF, not all of which is that informative, but do not miss reading the
second-last paragraph for an anecdote about Joh Justin, his costumes, and
Alexander Kordas reaction, which had me laughing out loud. In three simple
words: BUY THIS DVD. Do not walk, but RUN and order your copy if you love this
film like I do (for 62 years). Would love to see othe opinions here. See you at
the movies.
