Synopsis

A historical drama based on a fictional 110-year-old woman whose life and endurance symbolize Black America's struggle for freedom, justice and equality.
Just after the Civil War, a young Jane Pittman fled through dangerous, swampy country to escape the KKK. As a free woman she overcame adversity, oppression and poverty to build a life for herself and her family. Up north, she endured the slaying of her husband at the hands of racist whites. Years later, in her twilight, she took a daring position against an angry mob during the Civil Rights Movement. Throughout her life, Miss Jane Pittman fought with tenacity and courage until she triumphed over social inequity.

Product Notes

Nine Emmy awards were given to this masterful production of the fictitious account of life from a 110-year-old slave. The script covers the life of Miss Jane Pittman (Cicely Tyson) from her days as a slave during the the Civil War to the start of the civil rights movement in the 1960's. The scene when she drinks from the "white's only" water fountain due to the Jim Crow laws in the segregated south is one of the most defining moments in the film. Based on the novel by Ernest J. Gaines.
