Review

Rolling Stone (1/20/00, pp.55,59) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...all-the-way minimal, with creamy lite-jazz keyboards and sparse, tough percussion....unpretentious fun....demands - and earns - respect on [its] own ghetto-country terms."
Entertainment Weekly (1/7/00, pp.68-9) - "...cooks up a wicked gangsta-rap gumbo loaded with electro-funk grooves and slang-banging ghetto braggadocio....this Louisiana rhymer's vibe is undeniably tasty." - Rating: B+
Q (5/00, p.112) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...[Cash Money's] most charismatic MC, his lazy delivery meshing perfectly with the brittle, hook-heavy backdrops constructed by Mannie Fresh....bad behavior you can't help but dance to."
Vibe (2/00, pp.159-60) - "...a vital, 3-dimensional portrait of post-millennial black America....Familial, ghettoed-out, equal parts grime and shine, it finds Juvenile at the height of his powers..."
The Source (3/00, p.256) - 3.5 mics out of 5 - "...his latest steel gumbo pot full of Down South flows...returning with some of that same flavor that confused the world's taste buds in '98....it bangs consistently throughout....leaving us with some memorable moments in hip-hop."

Title Note

Personnel includes: Juvenile, Big Tymers, Lil' Wayne, Hot Boys.

THA G-CODE is the second album released in 1999 by Juvenile, the sometime Hot Boy and one in a long line of hip-hop guns for hire. This third career release stays Juvenile's course of pounding, dynamic beats, as he sends much love to some, while ripping on those who deserve not to dwell inside his world of cars, girls, more cars, and money, money, money.

While his lyrical content is in keeping with the well-hewn gangsta tradition, the unique, at times arrhythmic beats are what set Juvenile apart. These are not your typical Dre-style overlush backdrops, nor are they the Master P variety of dizzyingly off-kilter bleats; what Juvenile raps over here are some genuinely new sounds. Particularly enticing are the breakdown on "Never Had S***" and the mixed-and-matched funk on "F*** That Nigga." There's a constant pulse that drives THA G-CODE, one that makes clear that Juvenile has much more in store.
