Title Note

First of all, some expectations should be put to rest: this is not the comeback album you might be hoping for from Terre Thaemlitz. On the contrary, You? Again? sees America's onetime answer to Continental Europe's ambient techno craze revisit his work from the late '90s and early 2000s. This 70-minute album consists of remixes and alternate edits of cuts originally produced by Thaemlitz for himself, one of his aliases (Chugga, for instance), or other artists signed to his own Comatonse label. The album opens and ends with remixes of Chugga's "Theme for the Buck Rogers Light Rope Dance," and that sets the tone for most of the set. If you were hoping for some of the man's experimental, forward-looking music, look elsewhere, as You? Again? sticks mostly to the dancefloor. There are two notable exceptions to that rule: Social Material's "Class," which is very late-period Art of Noise, and Thaemlitz and Funk Shui's "Superbonus," a superb 12-minute double bass-driven flight through the chillout room. The rest of the material has its moments, but quickly becomes generic. Most of the ten tracks had already been released on Comatonse, except "Superbonus" (an unreleased edit) and two demos and re-edits taken from the sessions for G.R.R.L.'s 1997 self-titled effort. ~ Fran‡ois Couture
