Shellac Artist Snapshot:

After more than a decade of influence as producer (Pixies, Nirvana) and post-hardcore performer (Rapeman, Big Black), Steve Albini recruited Volcano Suns' Bob Weston and Brick Layer Cake's Todd Trainer to form the plodding, methodical post-rock Shellac. Signed to Big Black's former label, Touch And Go, Shellac released their acclaimed debut, AT ACTION PARK, in 1994. While the outfit toured sporadically due to numerous other commitments, they did release three more LPs between 1997 and 2000. However, it would be a full seven years before their fifth full-length, EXCELLENT ITALIAN GREYHOUND, emerged.

Review

Rolling Stone (4/2/98, p.74) - 3.5 Stars (out of 5) - "...exceedingly precise music in which silence counts as much as noise, and the rhythms...are wound as tight as industrial-strength springs. What surprises on TERRAFORM are the fleeting moments of lyrical beauty..."
Spin (5/98, p.140) - 7 (out of 10) - "...Shellac's music revels in the sonorous qualities of rock's basic elements. Albini's guitar distills rock's tired roar down to a uniquely brittle bite, and drummer Todd Trainer gracefully resurrects the lost art of the Bonham stomp..."

Title Note

Shellac: Steve Albini (guitar); Bob Weston (bass); Todd Trainer (drums).
