On this CD Toni Tennille (famous as a pop singer as half of Captain & Tennille) is joined by a big band playing arrangements by Matt Catingub and Sammy Nestico. No date is listed but it is probably from the early 1990s since the playing time is of LP length and baritonist Bill Green has since passed away. The disc is a demonstration of how not to sing jazz. Tennille, who has a pleasant but average voice, clearly does not feel the words she is interpreting, does not bother to improvise (her second and closing choruses tend to be exactly the same as her first) and she brings nothing new to any of the warhorse standards. "Makin' Whoopee" lacks the sly wit that it demands, "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby" does not have much joy, "Teach Me Tonight" lacks sensuality and the humor required of "Pardon My Southern Accent" is nowhere to be found. There is much more to singing jazz than getting dressed up, standing in front of a big band and opening one's mouth. If one does not believe in the words he or she is singing, the results are as absent of honest emotions and creativity as this misfire. ~ Scott Yanow
