In concordance with the announcement of their break-up and subsequent farewell tour, Arab Strap released their first retrospective, TEN YEARS OF TEARS. In pure Arab Strap fashion, the band does not phone in a greatest "hits" collection--they arguably had only one "hit" anyway, "The First Big Weekend," included here--but celebrate their demise with a collection of singles, live takes, and previously unreleased rarities and acoustic demos. While not a straight career-highlights retrospective, the disc follows the established aesthetic of the Scottish duo: it's an all-over-the-map affair with everything: acoustic meanderings, dabblings in dance music, and disjointed indie rock, all featuring vocalist Aidan Moffat's trademark droll, bawdy wit and Malcolm Middleton's accomplished arrangements.

While not the best start for newcomers, longtime fans will find much to cheer here: live versions of "Blood" and "Gilded," a Bis remix of "Turbulence," and acoustic demos of "Islands" and "Oxycontin." Also among the album's many treasures is "Where We Left Our Love," a great single left off of THE LAST ROMANCE, previously available only on the Japanese import version and released here for the English-speaking world for the first time.
