Review

"Melodramatic in some places--Gabriella believes her entire life was based on a lie, but she never doubts her mother's and father's love for her or for each other--TELL ME SOMETHING TRUE is a bittersweet journey about coming to understand and forgive the indiscretions of one's parents through the simple act of living one's life."

Publisher's note

Gabriella always loved the picture of her mother kneeling in front of a bed of roses, smiling, beautiful and impossibly happy. But then she learns that her late mother hated gardening; that she had never wanted the house in the Hollywood hills, the successful movie producer husband, and possibly, her only daughter. When Gabriella discovers a journal--a book that begins as a new mother's letters to her baby girl, but becomes a secret diary--the final entry leaves one question unanswered: the night her mother died, was she returning to Colombia to end an affair, or was she abandoning her family for good?

Learning perplexing truths about her late mother including her unhappiness in her marriage, her dislike of the family home, and her unwillingness to be a parent, Gabriella discovers a secret diary and considers the possibility that her mother was preparing to leave. Original. A first novel.

Annotation

At a Hollywood party, Columbian-raised Gabriella falls in love with an alluring gangster named Angel. When she discovers her dead mother's secret diary, she realizes that they shared the impulse to fall in love with dangerous men. TELL ME SOMETHING TRUE follows the dual narrative of Gabriella and her mother's affairs and romances, with Gabriella desperately trying to discover what choices her mother made so as to avoid falling into the same trap.
