This England turntable collective is primarily made up of one man, The Ruf. Technics Chainsaw Massacre, named for a popular brand of turntable, offers a double album of record-spinning wizardry. It satisfies hip-hop purists by utilizing samples and frequent scratches that more than manage to keep the beat ("Attack of the Wildstyle Beatfreak"). But more importantly, The Ruf doesn't just make you groove, he makes you think. Case in point is the superb and utterly original "The Stroboscope Syndrome." With poignant snippets from Run-DMC ("People judging other people by the color of skin") and KRS-One ("Are you ready for peace and equality?"), the hip-hop color line is thoroughly examined. ~ Craig Robert Smith
