Entertainment Weekly (5/28/93, p.65) - "...[George] Clinton's ceaselessly witty musical and verbal inventions on tunes like `Flash Light' are pure pop genius..." - Rating: A+
Q (8/93, p.113) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...bloody funky, bloody good fun and required research for Prince fans..."
The Source (7/93, p.73) - "...Are you ready to get P'ed on Well, here comes a golden shower of hits you can't afford to miss...this is the essential collection for your musical education and spiritual funkatization....Strictly non-stop jams..."

TEAR THE ROOF OFF includes a 24-page booklet with liner notes by Greg Tate and Tom Vickers, rare photos, and a Parliament glossary and manifesto.
This 2-CD set is probably the finest introduction to the P-Funk cosmology and aesthetic of booty-movin', mind-freeing metagrooviality. Parliament bring unbridled creativity to dance music, concocting a unique melange of rock, blues, soul, and jazz elements underscored by a celebration of black identity and drug-influenced sci-fi fantasies. Their music transcends the limitations of the dance genre and embodies something truly singular. Many of the Funk Mob's finest creations are included on this disc, including "P. Funk," "Up For The Down Stroke," "Chocolate City," "Mothership Connection," and the incomparably great "Flashlight."
This set is also peppered with such lesser-known gems as "Ride On" and the wonderfully soulful "Testify," a hit for the band in the mid-'60s (when they were still a Motown-inspired vocal group known as The Parliaments). Though not comprehensive, TEAR THE ROOF OFF at least gives some indication of this ensemble's astonishing range, vision, and musicianship. Those suitably intrigued should definitely go for the original discs and/or check out Funkadelic, Parliament's stranger and more high-minded twin. Nevertheless, this box set makes for an outstanding sampler and is a great place for the uninitiated to get a first, irresistible taste of the Funk.
