Following on the strength of two self-produced, self-distributed albums and a successful 2008 mixtape, Bay Area rapper The Jacka embraces a hip-hop-by-committee strategy for his third album, TEAR GAS--pooling the talents of no less than 12 different producers (including notables Traxamillion and Devin the Dude). Continuing the rapper's natural inclinations toward obligatory gangsta excess and sexual boasting, Jacka shines best here on more introspective material, including gritty urban tales ("Callin My Name") and an ode to his Muslim faith ("They Don't Know").
