TOWER.COM REVIEW

TAVERNER AND TUDOR MUSIC II is the second disc of music featuring the Danish emsemble Ars Nova Copenhagen and it's renowned conductor Paul Hillier.

The recording's centerpiece, John Taverner's "Gloria tibi Trinitas", occupies a position of particular importance in the history of English music, marking the high point of the pre-Reformation English festal Mass tradition. On this recording, the movements of the Mass appear alongside the plainchant Propers for Trinity Sunday, as well as pieces by composers representing the generations immediately before and after Taverner.

The disc also includes Robert Fayrfax's "Magnificat Regale" and hymn settings by Robert White, William Byrd, and Thomas Tallis.

ARS NOVA Copenhagen is widely recognized as one of the finest vocal emsembles in Europe equally dedicated to early music and new music. Some programs explore the cross-currents between the two, while others form detailed portraits of individual composers or genres within a given period. They are represented on two other recordings: Taverner's "Western Wind Mass" and other works (the first in a series devoted to Tudor Church Music), and a voices-and-percussion version of Terry Riley's '60s masterpiece "in C". The ensemble is due to record the five major narrative works by Heinrich Schutz for Dacapo, scheduled for release in 2009-11.

Baritone and conductor Paul Hillier, of Dorset, England, studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. His career has embraced singing, conducting and writing about music. He was founding director of the Hilliard Ensemble, and he subsequently founded Theatre of Voices. He has been chief conductor of Ars Nova Copenhagen since 2003. His more than 100 recordings, including seven solo recitals, have earned worldwide acclaim and won numerous prizes. His books about Arvo Part and Steve Reich, together with numerous anthologies of choral music, are published by Oxford University Press. In 2006, Mr. Hillier was awarded an OBE for services to choral music; in 2007 he received the Order of the White Star of Estonia and was awarded a GRAMMY for Best Choral Recording. In 2008 he launched his own Theatre of Voices Edition.
