Pharoah Sanders Artist Snapshot:

As arguably John Coltrane's most important follower, Pharoah Sanders was instrumental in furthering the idea of avant-garde jazz as both a spiritual medium and a musical one. His collaborations with Coltrane are some of the most crucial examples of free jazz ever made, and his solo work continued to expand and redefine the boundaries of the form. As Sanders career progressed he moved away from freedom principles--delving into pop and returning to traditional bop--yet continued to be a challenging and mercurial artist, performing and recording into the new millennium.

Title Note

Personnel includes: Pharoah Sanders (tenor & alto saxophones, piccolo, vocals), Sonny Sharrock (guitar), Henry Grimes (bass).

Judging from his work on the later Coltrane LPs, one might not have predicted that Pharoah Sanders would produce such an accessible free jazz album his very first time out on Impulse Records. (His post-Ayler squawking and squealing detracted from the magnificence of albums like LIVE AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD AGAIN and MEDITATIONS.) Happily, Pharoah seems to have conceived the beautifully realized TAUHID as a less frenetic meditation of his own. World music grounded him in a way it didn't even Coltrane, who typically used Indian and African motifs as spurs to his awesome late-stage improvisations. Actually, Pharoah and company (pianst Dave Burrell, who was never better, guitarist Sonny Sharrock, and the brilliant bassist Henry Grimes) do get pretty wild on the last track but they reign it in at several points for a grand melodic statement that makes full use of Sanders ultra-rich timbre.
