Ken Vandermark is something of a musical Tasmanian devil, lending his skills on both tenor sax and bass clarinet to multiple ensembles around the Chicago area, including his own group, the Vandermark 5. TARGET OR FLAG is Vandermark's fifth solo release and the 5's sophomore effort. While it's not his best, it bears plenty of evidence of the man's remarkable talents.

Vandermark's forte is blending post-bop structures with an outside sensibility, and that tendency drives TARGET OR FLAG, especially on improv-heavy jams like the 11-plus-minute "Attempted, Not Known." The quintet exhibits a ferocious simpatico, and Vandermark himself plays with great power and agility.
