Bay Area electroacoustic composer Gregg Kowalsky is part of a new generation of artist/musicians who work across multiple strata of post-digital experimentation, including psychoacoustics, sound and installation art, and drone music. Based on a series of performances reliant on the placement of various cassette boomboxes in an acoustic space, TAPE CHANTS is a studio approximation that, while not trying to replicate the exact surround spatialization of the piece, utilizes the unique acoustic properties inherent in the original lo-fi source material. Manipulating sources such as tuned sinewaves, shruti box, and gongs, Kowalsky patiently constructs an elegant, sculptural drone from the hiss and low-end distortion intrinsic to tape-saturation.
