Review

The Wire (p.49) - "[I]t's the choice of a cover of '11th Hour' by surf legends The Ventures that most intrigues....A rock based instrumental music of intelligence and emotion..."
Pitchfork (Website) - "[The songs] blend together into a pleasingly hypnotic whole....Repeat listens reveal a sturdy musical intelligence upholding the entire affair..."

Title Note

Grails: Emil Amos (vocals, guitar, synthesizer, tapes); Zak Riles (guitar, saz); William Slater (guitar, harpsichord, organ, bass instrument); Alex Hall (guitar, sampler); Ben Nugent (drums).

The Portland, Oregon, outfit Grails creates a Pacific Northwest brew of psychedelic gloom that recalls both the band's contempoaries (they've worked with or toured with Jandek and OM) and their foggy locale. REFUGE is percussive and rhythmic but without menace or bombast; its instrumentation is nuanced and expansive, but avoids meandering too far afield. The songs themselves can be strangely beautiful in their quietly mysterious way, a la ornate psych-thumpers like Yeasayer. The final track, "Clean Living," summarizes the album's impact best: fluid guitar harmonies spin echo-effect circles around flamenco horns and tribal drums, achieving a bewildering yet entrancing bliss.
