Re-released on Verve's prestigious Verve By Request sub-label, SWINGING ON THE MOON is a classic album that showcases Torme's considerable gifts as a vocalist. A theme record of the best kind, SWINGING consists solely of songs about the moon, returning again and again to the age-old notion of the moon as a romantic symbol. Standards such as "How High The Moon," "I Wished On The Moon," "Blue Moon," and "Moonlight In Vermont" are given exceptional treatments by Torme, whose clean, precise style is notable for its control-particularly in the higher register.

Torme rollicks through the up-tempo numbers and glides through the ballads, abetted by the Russell Garcia Orchestra, which lends that hep, swinging, early-'60s big-band sound. The opening title track, penned by Torme himself, is alone worth the price of the disc.
