Product note

The late Jimmy Giuffre was an underrated innovator--while most jazz musicians focused on one instrument, he played sax, flute, and clarinet equally well. In addition, Giuffre was a fine interpreter and excellent composer; his groups of the late 1950s through the mid-`60s dispensed with a drummer, while his originals explored silence as a compositional tool. The band featured on this 1958 live-at-Newport set (which can be seen in the film JAZZ ON A SUMMER'S DAY) was such a combo, featuring Jim Hall on electric guitar and Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone. Without abandoning the blues or swing as jazz foundations, Giuffre incorporated American folk elements into the mix; further, his use of low volume and quiet dynamics anticipated elements of the `60s avant-garde (especially the Chicago school as represented by Roscoe Mitchell and Wadada Leo Smith) and several ECM artists of the '70s and beyond. SWAMP PEOPLE captures a unique slice of jazz history.
