Album Description

Sweden knows riffs. From obtuse garage punk to anthemic pop to despondent death metal, the Scandinavian stronghold boasts countless crossover acts that consistently blow minds stateside. Their latest export fits into exactly none of the aforementioned categories, yet are so expert at their craft that they conjure all of them and more. Stockholm hard rock quartet CellOut are poised for bi-continental dominance on the eve of their Nuerra Records debut, Superstar Prototype. Flaunting infectious melodies that are this unapologetically this heavy young band''s trademark, Prototype''s title is as ambitious as its content, aspiring to be "the blueprint which all metal/rock records will set as standard," according to frontman Percy Mejhagen. "I believe that the intelligence of a songwriter shows in how dynamic he or she dares to be," adds Mejhagen. "No matter how ''hard'' or ''fast'' a song is, it still has [to have] that big fat chorus, which I hope will be CellOut''s trademark in the future."

Whoa, someone just chucked me in a time warp back to 2002! Nu-metal infused this may be, but that’s not a sleight against the band. It’s actually really, really good. The problem is that it is going to be an uphill struggle for the band to find an audience in these fickle days we live in. That’s a shame, as a few years back these guys would have already been massive. Coming across as a cross between Linkin Park, Disturbed and Drowning Pool with some extremely melodic hooks, the music of Cell Out is no-nonsense, no-frills stuff that is hugely enjoyable. “Dark Days” sounds like a missing classic from years ago, while “All My Demons Inside” adds some modern trad metal to the mix (In a Bullet For My Valentine sense). “Flooded” evokes Alter Bridge and a brighter Alice In Chains, which is a mix that shouldn’t work, but does here. “Set Things Straight” is back into early Drowning Pool territory and as with every song on the album, it’s heavy, instantly catchy and gloriously unfashionable. The music of Cell Out also reminds me of the hugely underrated Vacant Stare for their use of ultra-heavy riffs and soaring melodies. It may be a little too commercial for some tastes, but for fans of heavy music that’s packed with melody and punchy riffs (as well as some prime time nu-metal breakdowns), this will be a very worthwhile purchase.
