Despite his prodigious talent, British singer/guitarist Terry Reid made some of the worst decisions in the history of rock & roll. Having turned down offers to act as frontman for both Led Zeppelin and later Deep Purple, Reid never achieved the mainstream success his abilities seemed to promise. Despite the bad luck, Reid--dubbed "superlungs" for his other-worldly set of pipes--remained a cult favorite for decades after his would-be heyday, and is still considered something of a rockstar's rockstar, quick to be praised by contemporaries (Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page among them) and younger artists alike.

Terry Reid is one of rock's most curious should-have-beens. Very much a singer's singer, Reid's soul-deep wail made him a favorite of Eric Clapton, Ritchie Blackmore, Jimmy Page, and others (so much so with Page, that Reid was actually the guitarist's first choice to front Led Zeppelin), Reid was never able to achieve the solo success for which he believed he was destined. Nonetheless, he left behind a startlingly impressive body of work. Astralwerk's 17-track collection SUPERLUNGS (not to be confused with the considerably more comprehensive U.K. double-disc of the same name) provides an excellent introduction to this most infamous of underachievers.

The collection focuses primarily on Reid's earlier R&B-infused material, and contains his gritty readings of "Highway 61 Revisited," "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)," "Superlungs My Supergirl," as well his own songs "Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace," later covered by Cheap Trick, "Rich Kid Blues," and "July," among others. Those already familiar with Reid will want something more extensive, however, as an introduction to this quietly seminal figure, SUPERLUNGS is ideal.
