Though SUPER APE was one of the first "dub" records released by Lee Perry after his move to the legendary Black Ark Studio, it's a bit misleading to call this a dub album. Perry's earlier efforts with King Tubby saw music stripped to its core, with all sorts of added effects completely reshaped existing songs. SUPER APE is more of a dub-influenced instrumental showcase for the Black Ark's house band, The Upsetters, and for Perry's latest creations and concepts. Regardless, SUPER APE is a great introduction to the "Black Ark sound" that would become so popular over the next few years and has since been well-documented on the ARKOLOGY box set.

"Croaking Lizard" and "Black Vest" are both wonderful rhythms that later resurfaced in Max Romeo's WAR INA BABYLON. Other tracks, like "Underground" and "Come Follow," are mesmerizing, with vocals from the Heptones and from uncredited female singers. Though it may not boast some of the more out-there moments that dub can provide, SUPER APE is focused, full-sounding, and thoroughly enjoyable. It remains one of the best releases of Perry's career.
