Title Note

Vas: Azam Ali (vocals); Greg Ellis (percussion).

Vas is an innovative percussion and voice duo that combines ancient rhythms from the Middle East, Asia, and Africa with traditional Persian singing. In general, singer Azam Ali stresses the soothing, hypnotic power of the human voice over storytelling. She is much more concerned with "purity of sound" than she is with weaving a finely threaded narrative. The result is elegant music that favors melody over clever lyric-writing.

Seeking to transcend language itself, Vas creates a tapestry of percussion effects, together with powerful syllabic singing on the opening track, "Ningal." Other songs such as "Refuge" and "Remembrance" employ droning keyboard washes and nature sounds (bird chirps and running water). The longest track on the album, "Iman" is the high point of SUNYATA. The use of hammered dulcimer adds organic flavor to this piece as does the dense, mesmerizing drumming of Greg Ellis. Overall, Ellis's percussion score creates not only an eerie, mystical feeling to this album, but also a calming effect.
