Title Note

Sunnyside Records have been known from their inception to support both jazz and pop-styled singers over their two decades of producing music. This compilation sports 18 tracks from their vocalists, ranging from their first released artists like Meredith D'Ambrosio, Jay Clayton, and Jeanne Lee to the legendary Linda Sharrock; ethnic or world music icons like Milton Nascimento, Martirio, and Luciana Souza; the operatic Juliette Gr‚co; and contemporary discoveries Moss, Fleurine, Alyssa Graham, and Jamie Leonhart. Taken mostly from the lighter side, this collection would be ideal while cozying up with one's significant other on a rainy night with wine, cheese, and crackers. There are other outstanding performances aside from the aforementioned, including Lokua Kanza's "Nkolo Akosunga" in a choral Afro/new age mode; the multi-tracked "Flutes" from Toto Bona Lokua (which vocally assimilates the metal woodwind in a Cuban beat as well as you could expect); and Helena's "Morrer Nos Seus Bracos," in a light style reminiscent of Astrud Gilberto. Sharrock's under-the-skin vibrato on "Calling You," the ever present Lee with Mal Waldron dipping emotionally deep into the easy swinger "I Could Write a Book," and Clayton's spacy voice and electronics-driven "The Peace of Wild Things" are highlights for those who are fans. The poignant 6/8 flamenco-tinged "Si Me Pudieras Querer" by Martirio, Graham's cutely scatted Brazilian piece "Izaura," and the clever two-beat- and note-based "Area" by the pretty-voiced Leonhart all have their own individual brands of quaint charm. The group Moss do "Take It with Me," and should prompt listeners to pay attention to their full-version Sunnyside CD. Also included are two tracks from the excellent Tim Ries/Rolling Stones Project recording Stones World: "No Expectations" from the attractive-voiced Ana Moura; and "Lady Jane" with the unlikely Nascimento singing the famous Jagger/Richards song in a wondrous arrangement. Pay particular attention to Fleurine during "Love Marks," as she employs girlish, innocent jazz references in a world beat. These sunny voices represent not only a great cross section of what's happening in vocal music today, but allude to past global influences that primarily stemmed from the great jazz singers of the '50s and beyond, and perhaps what they might have sounded like today. ~ Michael G. Nastos
