Title Note

Personnel: Sunny Murray (percussion); Jack Graham, Byard Lancaster (alto saxophone); Jacques Coursil (trumpet); Alan Silva (bass instrument).

One of the all-time great free-jazz drummers, Sunny Murray developed his style playing with avant garde saxophonist Albert Ayler in the early 1960s, blazing a free-jazz trail that built on and expanded the innovations of Ornette Coleman and others. By the mid '60s Murray was releasing albums of his own, and this self-titled disc from '66 is one of his best.

With an ensemble featuring two alto sax players, a trumpeter, and a bass, Murray creates propulsive networks of energy that are intense and expressionistic, yet never lack for texture or color. Murray's drumming is central to the m.o.: not only is he group leader, but his kit work, which sounds like the cosmic battering of some multi-armed deity, dazzles and inspires. The 2007 reissue boasts beautifully remastered sound.
