Originally released in 1996, this retro combo's debut album has achieved cult status among aficionados of cool, 1960s-vintage soul jazz instrumentals. You can practically hear the bell-bottoms swishing to the Sugarman Three's version of "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," while the uptempo rhythms of originals like "Hot Sauce" and "Suzy Q," complete with the band's rich Hammond organ sound, have a period magic that's all their own.
