The 37th volume in the popular reggae and dancehall compilation series STRICTLY THE BEST delivers its usual bevy of island-based beats. The influence of hip-hop, reggaeton, and club grooves (all of which have been informed, to some degree, by the music that came out of Jamaica in the 1980s and '90s) is heard on these tracks, with hardcore dancehall artists such as Elephant Man, Sean Paul, and Beanie Man on board. Traditional roots reggae fans won't find much of what they're looking for here, but VOL. 37 is a satisfying cross section of contemporary Jamaican sounds in the early 2000s.
