Review

Spin (p.94) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "His charming imitations of T. Rex's woozy glam pop, as on 'Raise The Spirit,' could spur Marc Bolan to bolt from the grave and join in."
Q (p.127) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "STRANGELET lines itself with soft sunshine tunes that sit midway between Neil Young and R.E.M.."
No Depression (p.112) - "STRANGELET juxtaposes naturalistic, stream-of-consciousness reveries with a guns-and-guitars, B-movie sensibility..."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.102) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "From the graceful strings on 'Dream In Colour' to the coy tenor ukulele on 'Fountain Of Youth'...there's much to savour."

Title Note

Either as a solo act or with his old band, Grant Lee Buffalo, Grant Lee Phillips has been making high-quality records for so long it's easy to forget that his records are so good. STRANGELET returns him to original compositions--after the covers experiment NINETEENEIGHTIES--and while overtly referential at times (he openly cops the guitar riffs and vocal phrasing of Marc Bolan on a few tracks), the songwriting, performances, and production choices are all stellar. Fans of mournful, understated, folk-tinged indie rock looking for a new hero since Elliot Smith's untimely death, need look no further.
