Review

Uncut (p.96) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Forbert mixes gentle folk/pop with the occasional piquant rocker..."
No Depression (p.92) - "Nothing flashy here, just the deep satisfaction of knowing where you've been, understanding what you've got left, and a willingness to enjoy the ride."

Title Note

Personnel include: Steve Forbert (acoustic guitar); Marc Muller, Anthony Crawford (acoustic guitar); Robby Tuner (pedal steel guitar); Tim Coats (autoharp); Wayne Jackson (trumpet); Paul Errico (organ); Garry Tallent, Robby Turner (bass guitar); Roger Clark (drums); Eric Darken (congas).

Recording information: Moondog Studios, Nashville, Tennessee.

Some 30 years after having his career all but ruined by the curse of the "new Dylan" tag (see also: Loudon Wainwright III, Elliott Murphy, etc.), Steve Forbert has gracefully accepted the quirks of his checkered career on STRANGE NAMES AND NEW SENSATIONS (2007). A handful of new versions of old favorites (including his sole hit, the lovely "Romeo's Tune") sit comfortably with a new batch of witty and heartfelt songs ranging from the eulogy "Simply Spalding Gray" to the wry "Middle Age" and "Strange Names (North New Jersey's Got 'Em)." This is Forbert's strongest release in years.
