Alasdair Maclean (vocals, guitar) and James Hornsey (bass) met more than a decade ago and planted the seeds that would become the Clientele, motivated by the desire to forge a sound reminiscent of contemporary psych-poppers like Galaxie 500 and original avant-melody makers like Love. With the addition of Mark Keen on drums and Mel Draisy on the keys and other assorted instrumentation, they started releasing a steady stream of singles by the late '90s, before American indie mecca Merge finally gave them stable backing. Since 2000, the group has released a handful of well-received records for the label. Their touring stints with everyone from fellow pop enthusiasts Lambchop to the neo-hippie wildchildren Brian Jonestown Massacre have underlined their broad appeal to anyone who enjoys good hooks and a bit of post-punk intellect.
