Review

Entertainment Weekly (10/23/98, p.81) - "...His plaintive delivery of lyrics David `borrowed' from tabloid headlines is strangely affecting--but instead of the grating tonelessness of his old band, Fair is backed by the supple chops of Yo La Tengo, who smooth his rough edges without losing their peculiar charms..." - Rating: B

Product note

Jad Fair: David Fair.
Yo La Tengo: Georgia Hubley, Ira Kaplan, James McNew.
Engineers inlclude: Fred Brockman.
Recorded on June 21, 1994 and August 30, 1996.
The pairing of Half Japanese's Jad Fair with Hoboken's finest rock trio is a match made in indie rock heaven. With his brother David (the lyric-writing half of Half Japanese), Jad has been mining the outer borders of post-punk for the better part of twenty years, home-recording everything from free-jazz-inspired noise to lo-fi rock. Informed absurdists like the Fairs have always been an inspiration for Yo La Tengo. So over the course of two sessions in the past four years, inspiration became collaboration.
Armed with David's lyrics--cribbed from articles of the more surrealist supermarket tabloids--and with Yo La's gift for improvisation, the two parties begat STRANGE BUT TRUE. As may be expected with spur-of-the-moment projects, the quality ranges from the inspired to the tossed-off. Ira Kaplan's guitar is ever present, creating a thorny distraction in case the flood of words subsides. The rockers allow the rhythm section to put the throttle down while Jad rants to keep up. On quieter tracks, the rhythm section plinks and planks, and Jad becomes a campfire storyteller. Either way, STRANGE BUT TRUE is full of sublime Daniel Johnston-type moments, and if those are welcome in your heart, then this album should be too.
