Besides being one of the finest, most original country songwriters, Tom T. Hall was a key transitional figure between the straight-laced Nashville Sound of the 1960s and the iconoclastic Outlaw Country of the '70s. Hall's uniquely detailed, narrative lyrics were like short stories set to music. Some were character studies ("I Hope it Rains at My Funeral"), some were novelistic observations ("Ballad of Forty Dollars"), and some were well-spun tall tales ("A Week in a Country Jail"), with the best of them included here on this generous two-disc anthology.
Hall's guy-next-door vocal delivery is a perfect, low-key vehicle for his sharply written story-songs, whether he's describing a killer's electrocution ("Turn it On, Turn it On, Turn it On") or an itinerant musician's strained relationship with his father ("Homecoming"). Besides the brilliant writing, the key that really turns the lock here is Hall's indefatigable sense of humor, adding sparkle to even the darkest tales. STORYTELLER, POET, PHILOSOPHER is the definitive collection of this one-of-a-kind artist's work.
