A stripped-down, laid-back offshoot of founder member Mathew Pryor's main band Get Up Kids, The New Amsterdams play perfectly structured, emotive, downtempo acoustic songs. Their fourth album is a collection of dramatic, hushed miniature dramas, only occasionally disturbed by more rockist overtones, notably on the coda of "A Small Crusade," where desolate feedback cuts through the acoustic miasma. Other highlights include "Turn Out the Light," a swaying, country-tinged love song with an irresistible chorus.
