Review

"The clouds rarely lift in this grim, perceptive biography of Hollywood's first African-American screen siren....Gavin's clear-eyed account makes her the author of her life, and her pain."

"[T]wo books in one: a thorough and fluent biography and a history of the slow social rise of black people despite crippling discrimination and stinging humiliations--a history in which Horne's story is embedded...."

"[In this] deftly researched biography of the enigmatic entertainer,....[Gavin] reveals a woman who, despite her successes in films, nightclubs, and recordings, found happiness alien and love suspect."

"[A] revealing look at a woman who struggled with driving ambition and personal insecurities....This is a mesmerizing portrait of an iconic American figure." (starred review)

Publisher's note

Draws on previously untapped sources and first-person interviews to profile the mid-twentieth-century Hollywood actress and singer, evaluating her painful childhood, the challenges she faced as a barrier-breaking African-American performer, and the ways in which she inspired such performers as Barbra Streisand, Eartha Kitt, and Aretha Franklin.

Annotation

"The beautiful Miss Lena Horne...!" How many time the singer and actress must have heard that in her years on stage and screen. But for the elegant and light-skinned black artist, the attention lavished on her good looks had a malicious side to it, for it expressed a downplaying of her talents, abilities, and hard work. As James Gavin makes painfully clear in his unromantic biography STORMY WEATHER, Horne's experiences as a performer, which pushed her into the spotlight years before the Civil Rights movement, wore on her. For the first 30 years of her career, her movie scenes were edited out of the films for southern screenings. And, although she had more crossover success than most black performers of the time, she would be denied many opportunities because of her race. Laced with personal bitterness and sadness, Horne's story, however, is in many ways triumphant--she truly paved the way for black performers and was on the vanguard of chipping away at racial barriers. In his biography, Gavin does an excellent job of fleshing out the star's personal life details within a broader social context, but he also takes a serious look at her work. His critical analyses, which are balanced and thoughtful, offer this talented performer and courageous woman the respect she deserves.
