Stop and Listen, Vol. 1 was the BBE label's first release and doubled as the first in their long-running series. Like the volumes that followed, Stop and Listen, Vol. 1 featured a wide array of club songs handpicked by a DJ. In this case, it's Dr. Bob Jones, who selects 12 tracks and presents them free of mixing. There's little attention paid to whether or not these tracks work well together. Instead, the focus is on putting together a broad range of rare cuts. Jones shows his experience as a veteran jock and club-runner; his picks span three decades of soul, disco, and house music. It's not all that easy to digest in whole, but it's a handy disc to have around, especially if you're into making your own mixes. Highlights include Pal Joey's "Hot Music," Sarah Vaughan's version of "Inner City Blues," Eddie Russ' "Zaius," Curtis Mayfield's "You're So Good to Me," and Linda Clifford's "Runaway Love." ~ Andy Kellman

The third volume of this series again focuses on the best house, disco, and garage tracks, including songs by Thelma Houston, Rainbow Brown, Next Phase, John Gibb, and Breakpoint. ~ John Bush
