Title Note

A mainstay of the Chicago R&B scene who used to record for the estimable Malaco label, Stan Mosley is firmly committed to the essence of deep Southern soul. Still, he's no retro obsessive in the manner of the Daptone stable of finicky soul reenactors, which means that Steppin Out has a timeless quality about it that owes as much to the silky quiet storm slow jams of the '80s (check the lovely Freddie Jackson-like ballad "Together Forever") as it does to vintage Motown. Mosley's sweet vocal style makes even tense tunes like the oddly arranged "I Want You" (built on a rhythm track that sounds unnervingly like a hospital respirator and featuring a weirdly prominent compressed piano hook) sound inviting, and on straightforward love songs like "This Love Has Power" and the gospel-tinged "Can We Work It Out?," Mosley puts across enough of a sleek lover-man vibe to make Steppin Out a great late-night R&B make-out record straight out of the old school. ~ Stewart Mason
