Title Note

Unlike the previous volumes, Steppin Across the U.S.A., Vol. 4 goes back to the '60s for the majority of its songs. While that does seem like a prudent idea on the surface, a lot of this music isn't for the faint of heart, with depressing qualities that aren't conducive to cutting a rug. By far the best of the lot, the Monitors' "Say You," with its lead by Richard Street, has the automatic charge of lesser-known though potent Motown. While the Isley Brothers certainly had their fair share of songs good for stepping, Steppin Across the U.S.A., Vol. 4 gets in the way-back machine for its Isley Brothers entries. Both "Standing on the Dancefloor" and "Write to Me" are shout'n'shimmy ditties that would only appeal to hardcore R&B fanatics. Tracks like Jan Bradley's "I'm Over You," "Oh Cindy" from the Vibrations, and Bertha Tillman's "Oh My Angel" seem a bit slow and depressing to be stepping faves. It hardly matters. Steppin Across the U.S.A., Vol. 4 won't make many listeners hit the dancefloor, but it's a fair set of little-known (though potentially grating) R&B songs. ~ Jason Elias
