Review

Entertainment Weekly (4/13/01, p.77) - "...Mixing Texas bravado with sardonic story-telling....the singer-songwriter gives them a poigant, quirky authenticity not heard since John Prine..." - Rating: B+

Title Note

Personnel includes: Charlie Robison (vocals, acoustic guitar); Natalie Maines (vocals); Pat Buchanan (acoustic & electric guitars); Rich Brotherton (acoustic guitar, mandolin, mandola); Kevin Carroll (acoustic guitar); David Grissom (6-&12-string guitars); Marty Muse, Robby Turner (lap steel guitar, steel guitar); Emily Robinson (banjo); Richard Bowden, Gene Elders (fiddle); Mario "Sunny" Sauceda, William "Chip" Dolan (accordion); Mark Rubin (tuba); Riley Osbourne (piano, Clavinet, Farfisa organ); John Ludwick (bass); Mark Patterson (drums); Joe Chemay, Jim Lauderdale, Anthony Martin, Bruce Robison, Charlie Robison (background vocals).

Engineers include: Billy Sherill, Kyle Lehning, Tony Castle.

Recorded at Pedernales Studios, Austin, Texas.

Charlie Robison's follow-up to his surprise hit debut LIFE OF THE PARTY confirms several things: he and his brother Bruce are great story telling songwriters in the tradition of John Prine and Steve Earle; the previous album was no fluke; and his music is about as far removed from the Nashville norm at the dawn of the 21st century as it's possible to be and still be legally considered a country artist (the steel guitar on the stone country "The Wedding Song" notwithstanding).

STEP RIGHT UP is surpassingly well crafted stuff, but there's absolutely nothing slick about it. High points include a gorgeous Byrds-style cover of the NRBQ power pop obscurity "I Want You Bad," and the astounding "Desperate Times," which manages to pack in the same true crime story punch as the movie A SIMPLE PLAN in a fraction of the time.
