Madacy forgoes their usual bottom-of-the-barrel reissues in favor of this three-disc set of "nothing but the hits" classics from Stax. There are 52 cuts from all over the Stax historical rainbow, ranging from obvious hits like Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" to less obvious but equally fine selections like the Mad Lads' version of Jimmy Webb's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix." In fact, for every obvious entry, there is one that isn't -- so for each Johnny Taylor, Albert King, Rufus Thomas, or Staple Singers standard, there is something rather obscure by the Soul Children, the Temprees, March Wind, or Rance Allen. The set closes with the scorching blues of "Tupelo" by Pops Staples. The material here does speak for itself, and the price on this set is absolutely right. This is a terrific way to build a Stax shelf and add to anybody's Southern soul library. ~ Thom Jurek
